COWES WEEK

COWES WEEK

Join one of the longest-running regatta events in the UK with Cowes Week. It’s one of the most revered sporting events and is a highly-anticipated event for the British. It starts in the first week of August in the famed sailing town, Cowes, located on the Isle of Wight. With this regatta, the town comes alive with sailors the world over pointing their yacht charters on the Solent for a week of intense competition.

It’s the most significant and longest running sailing event of its kind in the world. In addition to being a renowned regatta, this yacht charter event is a spectacular social event, one that got its start in 1826. Steeped in rich history and tradition, only the two World Wars stopped Cowes Week in its entire history. Once a small yachting event for the royals and elite, it is now one that attracts countless sailors as well as spectators annually.

Roughly 8,500 competitors join in the races for Cowes Week. Over 1,000 yachts take part in the 35 different races that happen each day of the regatta. Yachters from all over compete to win coveted prizes like the Britannia Cup, the Queen’s Cup, and even the Young Skipper’s Trophy for the younger set.

If you’d rather watch all the excitement of this regatta, there are some superb vantage points to catch a glimpse of the events of Cowes Week. For those that would rather not compete and merely enjoy the excitement from their yacht charter, there are many opportunities to have fun with free live music and plenty of daily entertainment. Posh parties where the rich and famous come to play are the ideal place for you to be seen.

Fireworks during Cowes Week are a must-see and are as traditional as the event itself. This spectacular show in the sky has been part of this yacht charter event for over 150 years and is held on the Friday of Cowes Week. Inside Cowes, this lovely town by the sea is adorned with historic architecture and charming streets brimming with an eclectic array of fine shops. Accommodations are a bit limited though, so either plan in advance to reserve a room at one of the hotels, guest houses or bed, and breakfasts. Other accommodations are available in the nearby towns on the island, plus you can always enjoy being pampered on your very own yacht charter.

Wherever you stay on the island, the Solent is the stretch of water where it takes place. It runs between the southern coast of England and the Isle of Wight. Cowes can be found on the northern coast. Take your yacht charter over or use the ferry from Southampton to get directly to Cowes. Another fascinating option is to arrive via helicopter and be the belle of Cowes Week!
