SAILING IN GRENADA
SPICE UP YOUR YACHT CHARTER WITH A TRIP TO GRENADA
The gorgeous island of Grenada has long been called the “Spice Island” because it is one of the biggest producers of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cloves, and cocoa. The fertile volcanic soils here in this southern Caribbean locale are ideal for growing these delightful spices, and even more ideal for a yacht charter.
Grenada is located north of Trinidad and Tobago at the southern end of the Windward Islands. It’s also south of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Not a bad place to wind up with a yacht charter, considering you could visit them all.
Grenada is a famed land for sailors and is filled with rich culture, stunning island scenes, and perfect conditions for sailing. There are also two smaller islands that are part of Grenada. They are both quieter places that make for a hidden getaway. Carriacou and Petite Martinique are northeast of the mainland. If you’re looking for a genuinely traditional Caribbean experience, you’ll find it in Grenada. The dishes are spicy and have a unique cultural flair. The mountains are lush and extravagant. The seaside villages are colorful and mixed with plantations and beautiful beaches between them.
Along the coasts, forests give way to mangroves and reveal white sand beaches that stretch on as far as the eye can see. Bright blue waters filled with coral reefs make ideal opportunities for exploration under the water. Plus, the rum distilleries offer special learning and tasting experience. You’ll find ways to try something new here every day, including the national dish, known as oil down, and other unique Grenadian delicacies.

BEST TIME TO VISIT GRENADA
It’s hot and tropical in Grenada throughout the year, but the cooling Trade winds keep it enjoyable at 29°C to 30°C. From January to May, it’s the dry season. January is the most popular month to come, particularly because of the Grenada Sailing Festival making it ideal for your yacht charter. February through April are the driest months and the best time for travel. Booking far in advance during those times is strongly recommended.
From the end of March to the beginning of April, the sea turtles begin to nest on the north coast, a splendid sight for any nature lover. May is a wonderful time to visit as the prices are lower and the warm weather is mostly dry, quite similar to January. From June to December, rain is heavy yet quite brief. Most of the year, there is still plenty of sunshine.
Discounted rates during these times make it a steal to come during the off-season. The last turtle hatchlings are from the end of the June through the beginning of July. Many tropical showers come and go, but loads of sunshine prevail and give way to more greenery and gorgeous tropical flowers. Hurricane season here is from July to November. The risk of hurricanes is very low but tropical storms may be a reality.

While the name is unremarkable, this national dish is sure to leave a lasting impression. It’s a hearty pot brimming with chicken, salted meat, or fish, crayfish, breadfruit, local dumplings, green fig, dasheen, sweet potato, callaloo and other vegetables.
Cou Pois
This corn flour and vegetable mixture cooks slowly until it turns into a smooth yet stiff mixture. It’s served both hot and cold and makes for a nice pairing fish or chicken.
Fried Bake & Saltfish Souse
This tasty offering is what the locals often eat for breakfast. The bakes are often sweet. They’re fried golden brown and are a delight.
Callaloo
Other countries serve this stew of green leafy plants, though Grenada has its own unique flavors. Here, it’s usually the leaves of the dasheen plant and contains okra, salted meats, fish, hot and black pepper, onions, and a medley of spices.
Roti
This bread originated in India. It’s light and fluffy and stuffed with a delightful filling of curried meat, chicken, or vegetables. You’ll find these for lunch or dinner. You can also get them made with extra hot sauce if you’d prefer more spice.
Curry Goat
Browned in sugar in hot oil, goat or mutton then gets slow-cooked with onions, garlic, hot pepper, curry powder, and a wonderful selection of Grenadian herbs and spices. It’s rich and flavorful, often served with rice, mango chutney or even a lime pickle.
Lambie Souse
It has nothing to do with lamb, believe it or not. It’s what the people here call conch. It’s tenderized, then slowly cooked with garlic, onion, peppers, herbs and lime juice for an incredible flavor. Often, it contains vegetables, potatoes and dumplings too.
Pelau
Chicken is typically the meat of choice for this dish. It’s caramelized with sugar and then added to a pot with rice and vegetables. This all gets simmered in stock or coconut milk, something you simply must experience.
Coconut Drops
A sticky mixture of sugar, butter, flour, and egg gets topped with grated coconut, then baked until brown for a sweet and tasty treat!

Balls of cocoa are steeped in hot water along with sweetened milk and sugar for this delicious hot drink. Herbs like cinnamon, thyme and bay leaf are added too, giving it an exotic taste.
Sweet Potato Pone
Sweet potatoes are used in many desserts here. This is a pudding that is baked in the oven just like a cake. Save room for it!
