Miami is like a place all of its own and is so vast it has many areas to explore. There’s the Miami City Mainland and Miami Beach. These are separated by the dazzling Biscayne Bay, lending each a distinctive vibe that gives a bit of peace and quiet just north of the Keys for an easy sailing day. Biscayne Bay isn’t that large – just 35 miles (56.32 km) long and roughly 8 miles (12.9 km) wide. It runs south from Miami and down to Key Largo. The bay is mostly protected on the east side by man-made islands as well as a few natural ones. Key Biscayne and Elliot Key are two of the most well-known of these. There’s also the Scattered Keys.

When to visit MIAMI BEACH

BEST TIME TO VISIT MIAMI BEACH

In Miami, one of the best times to visit is between March and May. The sun is shining, and the temperatures are pleasant in the 70s and low 80s during the day. The beautiful weather is indeed a reason to come for your yacht charter, but the rates are lower than they are in the peak winter season. While the weather is generally pleasant, it can get a bit rainy which is why you should pack an umbrella just in case.

From June to September, Miami Beach is in the low season for tourists. The main reason for this is the risk of hurricanes and tropical storms. Plus, the rainfall is higher during this time as are the temperatures which can climb upwards of 90 degrees. However, if you can handle that, you’ll enjoy cheaper airfare and accommodations. Vacation packages are also a steal during this time.

From January to April, it’s the peak season. The weather is gorgeous and so much cooler, but the prices are higher. It’s worth it though to swim in the famed waters of the beaches and stroll down Ocean Drive on South Beach to check out the art deco buildings from the pre-war era. If you insist on coming during the busy season, you may find better rates outside of South Beach if you don’t mind the drive or the traffic. Book in advance to be sure to get an oceanfront room. It’s worth it!

Don’t care about the great parties? It would help if you came during what’s referred to as the shoulder season. It starts in the fall and into the early party of winter. The temperatures cool down slightly to the mid-80s, and the area is less prone to rains and tropical storms. The arts scene in Miami Beach comes alive during October with Miami’s Broadway series, and there are many more things to enjoy a quieter time in this vibrant city too.

GETTING TO MIAMI BEACH

Getting to MIAMI BEACH

The closest airport is Miami International Airport (MIA), but Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) is another option that’s about 40 minutes away. Traffic, however, may take you longer to traverse. Unfortunately, the Miami Metrorail and Metromover don’t go to Miami Beach, but you can take the J or 150 Bus. Each of these connects to the Metrorail from Miami International Airport. You can get to South Beach by transferring to the southbound C, L, or S bus. From the 150 Bus, you can move to South Beach Local which is the last stop. You can take the #1 Broward County bus to Aventura Mall from Ft. Lauderdale International Airport to catch the Miami-Dade S bus. Be advised though that buses can take a while and often run late due to traffic. If you don’t want to wait around, catch a taxi or rent a car. With a car, you can take the Julia Tuttle Causeway, also known as I-195 to Mid Beach or the MacArthur Causeway in South Beach to connect.

WINING AND DINING IN MIAMI BEACH

Wining and Dining MIAMI BEACH

The culinary scene in Miami is truly unmatched. With thousands of restaurants, some of them world-famous plus an incredible blend of local, Latin American, Caribbean, and European cuisines, you’ll have a gastronomic delight of an experience eating here. Seafood is recommended since it’s so fresh, and any cuisine you dream of tasting is available from around the world including French, Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Caribbean, to name a few. Here are some of the things you should try that Miami is noted for.

Chicharrón

Of South American cuisine, this fried pork bit is a crispy and tasty delight. You may also find it made from chicken, beef, or mutton, but pork is the most common option.

Stone Crabs

Not to be missed, stone crabs are in season from October to May. They’re tender and succulent, served chilled along with a perfect mustard sauce. You can also request drawn butter. Having both the sauce and the butter is like being in heaven.

Fish Sandwich

With so much fresh fish, fish sandwiches are on the menu everywhere. From grilled to fried to blackened, there’s no wrong way to enjoy fresh fish in Miami when you come sailing in on your yacht charter.

Arepas

Once you have one, you’ll forever be smitten. Arepas are corn pancakes that can be eaten as-is or, more commonly, are stuffed with cheese, meat, or even vegetables. Miamians love it stuffed with pulled pork and melted cheese.

Ceviche

Another favorite menu item all over the beaches of Miami is ceviche. Fresh raw fish that’s cured in citrus juices from lemons or limes and spiced with chili is the ideal way to enjoy a balmy Florida day.

Cuban Sandwich

There is no way you can come to Miami without trying a Cuban sandwich. It is a pressed ham and cheese sandwich with roasted pork, yellow mustard, Swiss cheese and sliced dill pickles on fresh Cuban bread. It’s simple yet incredibly satisfying, and you won’t truly have tasted Miami if you don’t get one.

Churrasco

Because Miami is one big melting pot, you’ll find that Argentinian cuisine is also quite popular, especially churrasco. A great way to fill up when you’re hungry, you’ll see the waiters walking around with giant skewers of meat that they slice right onto your plate.

Key Lime Pie

The sweet, tart and creamy Floridian dessert known as key lime pie is the best way to end a meal. You have to try it!

Mofongo

It sounds a little like a bad word, oh but what a divine dish! It’s a fusion of African and Puerto Rican flavors with fried plantains garlic, and chicharrones all smashed up and molded together as one. It is to die for.

Fried Snapper

A favorite Haitian dish, you’ll love this fish that is crispy on the outside yet tender and flaky inside.

Drinks

Miami Beach is a party town, with much of the action on South Beach. More inland, Coconut Grove is still a wild time. Wherever you go in Miami though, the Cuba Libre is a favorite drink. You’ve probably already had one when you’ve ordered a rum and Coke. The mojito is another one of Cuban influence. Minty, sugary, bubbly and full of rum, it’s an excellent refresher any time.
