ST BARTHS BUCKET REGATTA

ST BARTHS BUCKET REGATTA

One of the most dazzling super yacht sailing events is the St. Barths Bucket Regatta. This competitive yet fun and relaxed yachting event in the Caribbean is a must-do for anyone seeking a great yacht charter event. It began in 1995 and has been a massive draw for the famed among crews, captains, and boats. By invitation only for the lucky, they set sail to the stunning French island of the elite.

This regatta takes place in March and is considered the event to kick off spring. Visitors include the world’s largest yachts as well as sailing lovers from every corner of the globe for this fun-filled three-day event. It begins and ends outside of the capital city, Gustavia. After each day of racing, participants anchor up in the harbor and enjoy the fun of Caribbean-style reveling.

Believe it or not, this all started with the first Bucket Regatta which began in August of 1986 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. During a birthday celebration that Nelson Doubleday created, a selection of yacht owners got into a discussion about the best yacht designs and commenced arguing about their sailing successes. A friendly competition was set for the very next day featuring seven superyachts racing to go for a 15-mile stretch on Nantucket Sound. The only prize was to gain bragging rights among fellow yachters. Despite being steeped in competition, the love of sailing and camaraderie that prevailed and they used a spare bucket they’d found nearby to commemorate the event, one that would forever be cemented in history. Since 1986, this yachting event has been a dream come true for those with the very same intentions of competing while having fun and making friends along the way.

Then in 1995, the event moved to St. Barths. It now ranks as second in popularity for events on the island with New Year’s Eve being the first. The Bucket is a beautiful event to be a part of, whether you’re in the mood to show your sailing prowess or you want to join in the fun of the sport and parties that go with it.
